Cairn Terrier Resources

The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds and also one of the oldest Scottish working dogs. It was developed in the Scottish Highlands where it was ideal for hunting burrowing animals among the cairns. The Cairn Terrier is still used as a hunting dog in Scotland.

The coat of a Cairn Terrier should ideally be hand stripped, since shears and scissors can damage the rugged out coat of the dog. You strip the coat by pulling old dead hair out by the roots. It is not harmful for the dog and will help keeping the coat in good condition, since it will leave room for new fresh growth. The new growth will be better at protecting the Cairn Terrier from water and dirt. A Cairn Terrier should not be frequently bathed, especially not with detergents, since this can damage the coat.
