Great Pyrenees Resources

The Great Pyrenees – also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog – is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. It has been used as a working dog by the Basque people for several thousand years. The Basque people traditional inhabit the Pyrenees Mountains in the southern parts of France, hence the name Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Eventually, this breed caught the eyes of the French court and became its official dog. The Great Pyrenees is a big dog ideally suited for guarding livestock, particularly sheep, and it is related to many other European dog breeds used for livestock protection, such as the Hungarian Kuvasz and the Anatolian Shepherd from Turkey. If you take a look at the hind leg of a Great Pyrenees, you can see a double dewclaw. If you want to learn more about this ancient breed, there are several good resources to be found online.
