Shar Pei Resources

The Shar Pei was developed in the Guangdong province of China were it served as the guard dog. It was also used for dog fights. The Shar Pei is famous for its blue-black tongue and for how the puppies are born with an excessively wrinkly skin. As the dog grows bigger, it will “grow in to its skin”. The coat is short and rough, and the name Shar Pei can be translated as “sand skin”. Despite its very long history in China, the Shar Pei was not recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club until 1991. DNA analysis has now confirmed that the Shar Pei is one of the oldest still existing dog breeds in the world.
