The Weimaraner was developed as a hunting dog during the early years of the 19th century. The first Weimaraner dogs were used by royal families during large game hunts, e.g. during the hunting of bears and wild boar. The name Weimaraner comes from Karl August, the Grand Duke of Weimar, who was found of hunting. As large game hunting became less popular, the Weimaraner was given new tasks and turned out to be an excellent hunting dog for rabbit, fox and fowl hunting. The Weimaraner can be described as an all-round hunting dog, since it can carry out several different tasks. It is a very lively dog and it needs to be given ample opportunity to burn off its energy, otherwise it can become hyperactive.
